Phonetics studies the sound patterns of language and speech communication in general. It is an interdisciplinary study area which interfaces findings from several scientific areas, from linguistics (sound patterns of individual languages) to speech technology, speech elocution and others.
As a university study programme, phonetics is accredited only at the Faculty of Arts in Prague. Phonetics can be studied as an undergraduate programme (in combination with a second major), as a graduate programme (as a single major, or in combination with another one), as well as at the postgraduate level.
Several courses offered by Institute of Phonetics staff are taught in English.
